Currency grading is a central aspect to collecting antique
currency. This becomes particularly true when trying to sell
your notes. Paper Money Values are primarily based on 3
factors: The condition or grade of the note, the popularity of
the note, and the rarity of the note. Grading, of course, ties into
rarity because the higher the grade the more difficult the note to
obtain.
It is important to know currency grading standards. Here is a
numerical grading scale as provided by PCGS, a well
respected grading company.

There has always been some controversy over the topic of
currency grading. In large part this was due to different people
applying different grading standards. Grading, some people
maintain, is purely subjective. While there is undoubtedly a
subjective element there has a been a need to apply unbiased
and consistent grading standards.
Today it is becoming clear that Third Party Grading has
become the standard for Antique Currency. These companies
provide an unbiased (hopefully!) opinion on the condition of
your note. This allows you to realize higher prices when selling
your notes! Two companies are well respected for reliable and
consistent grading standards. For those World Paper Money
Collectors PMG also grades World Paper Money.
